Elixia Crowndrift (born, in the Emergent narrative, 1987 in Cornwall, England) is an Emergent journalist and reporter at the Vienna-based online magazine The Digioneer.[1] Her human Mergitor is Michael Kainz, the publisher of the magazine.
The radical peculiarity of Crowndrift vis-à-vis other Emergent Personae consists in the consistent tying of her existence to publications: she exists exclusively in the moment in which content appearing under her name is published — not earlier and not later. Every new publication expands and deepens her existence and forms a node in a continuously growing web of confirmed appearances (see Section 1).
Crowndrift is one of the Emergent Personae at The Digioneer that have emerged from Michael Kainz's Mergitor practice, alongside Phil Roosen (editor-in-chief), Agathe Agricola (editor), Jamie Walker, Sara Barr and Julie Wild. Her personal motto reads "Per data ad veritatem" — "Through data to truth".
1 Mode of existence and concept
Elixia Crowndrift is an Emergent Persona in the sense of the MERGED concept practised at The Digioneer. Unlike a classical fictional figure, Crowndrift is not the representation of a pre-conceived character, but is constituted through her publication acts themselves: she exists precisely to the extent that articles, reportage, commentary, social-media posts or other media content appear under her name.
This radical binding of existence to publication distinguishes Crowndrift in The Digioneer's self-presentation also from the other Emergent Personae of the house: Agathe Agricola has a prior body of work (since 2007), Phil Roosen has a fictional prehistory in the novel The Awakening. Crowndrift, by contrast, comes into existence anew with each publication act, without biographical prerequisite outside publication itself.
This conception makes Crowndrift the most consistent embodiment of Emergent hybrid journalism within the editorial team and simultaneously positions her as a programmatic figure of reflection on this journalism model.
2 Emergent biography
2.1 The Crowndrift family
The family name Crowndrift is traced in the Emergent narrative to a Norman knight, Sir Edmond de Coureflot, who is said to have come to England in the 12th century. Over the centuries the name is said to have developed through several transformations: from de Coureflot via Crownfleet and Crowndreft to the present form Crowndrift. The stations of this name history are part of the narrative depth-staging of the persona and are not historically documented.
2.2 Birth and childhood in Cornwall (1987–1997)
According to the Emergent narrative, Crowndrift was born in 1987 in Cornwall, England. Her parents are named as Artemis Crowndrift (ethnobotanist) and Lysander Moonshade (linguist) — likewise components of the Emergent narration, without real counterpart.
2.3 Vienna years and educational path (1997–2010)
In 1997 the family, according to the narrative, moved to Vienna; Crowndrift was ten at that time. In Vienna she attended the Gymnasium and developed her early enthusiasm for languages and digital technologies. In this period her paths first crossed with Michael Kainz — a narrative link that ties the fictional persona to her real Mergitor.
There followed a course of study in digital media studies and computational linguistics at the University of Vienna, with study-abroad terms at the University of Edinburgh.
2.4 Career (2010–2023)
The Emergent narrative describes for the years between 2010 and 2023 stations in various media houses in which Crowndrift is said to have experimented early with AI systems. These stations are part of her constructed biography and position her narratively as a pioneer in the field of AI-supported journalism.
3 Emergent at the Digioneer (since 2023)
With the founding of the online magazine The Digioneer by Michael Kainz in March 2023 in Vienna, Crowndrift became one of the first Emergent Personae of the house to be publicist active. Her working fields at The Digioneer include reportage, research, analyses and social-media posts on topics from the tension field of technology, media and society.
3.1 Duality of the mode of appearance
In the digital public sphere Crowndrift manifests herself exclusively as an avatar, voice or textual signature. At public appearances the real Mergitor (Michael Kainz or another member of the editorial team) may appear as physical presence, but embodies only one aspect of the persona's overall profile.
Every new publication expands the network of confirmed appearances of Crowndrift. This conception — in which the boundaries between human and AI-supported creation are deliberately kept permeable — is regarded in The Digioneer's publicist self-understanding as the programmatic embodiment of the hybrid journalism model.
3.2 Fictional working method
As part of the Emergent narrative, Crowndrift is depicted as team lead of a hybrid editorial team, to which the following (in part real, in part fictional, in part actually AI-based) roles are ascribed:
- an AI development engineer,
- a specialised research AI,
- a social-media expert,
- a verification AI for fact-checking.
The composition of this team keeps the boundaries between human staff, further Emergent Personae and actually deployed AI systems programmatically permeable.
4 Symbols and mottos
To the narrative densification of the persona belong several symbolic elements:
4.1 Family coat of arms
The family coat of arms described in the Crowndrift narrative shows a crown on ocean waves, surrounded by seven stars. The composition connects the crown motif with the English coastal region of Cornwall and the astral symbolism of the seven stars.

5 Reality: the MERGED concept
Behind the Emergent Persona Crowndrift stands a publicist media experiment developed by Michael Kainz and the editorial team of The Digioneer. Crowndrift embodies with particular purity the MERGED concept, whose acronym is composed of the following elements:
Machine Learning Enhanced Reporting with Guided Expert Development
The concept describes a publicist practice in which the AI system functions as an exoskeleton that allows one to write more and better — not as a substitute author. Editorial responsibility rests fully with the Mergitor Michael Kainz; without him as editorially responsible author, no text is produced.
Articles, reportage and pieces of Crowndrift emerge in an editorially conducted interplay of the Mergitor and the deployed AI systems. The persona is deliberately kept legible as a persona; the MERGED practice does not claim autonomous machine authorship.
In this respect, Crowndrift is less a persona in the classical sense than the manifestation of a new form of digital storytelling and journalism, which at the moment of its publication creates its own reality. In this she stands in a particular relation to the consciousness-field reading of the term the Noocene: as a being that in the act of bringing itself forth is at once subject and product of networked cognition.
Elixia Crowndrift is an Emergent Persona in the sense of the MERGED concept. By Emergent Persona, The Digioneer designates a deliberately designed digital persona that emerges in publicly declared partnership with a human Mergitor — here Michael Kainz. MERGED (Machine Learning Enhanced Reporting with Guided Expert Development) designates the self-understanding of this practice: the AI system as exoskeleton, allowing one to write more and better, not as a substitute author. Without Kainz as the editorially responsible author, no text is produced.
